Ben Fernandez is an experienced Family Law barrister and an accomplished courtroom advocate with demonstrated experience in many areas of law, including Criminal, Family and Domestic Violence matters. Ben has particular interest in matters that relate to the well-being of children whether that be parenting matters in the Federal Circuit and Family Court or child protection matters in the Local Court.
Ben has both prosecutorial and defence experience and appears in criminal matters in the Local and Supreme Courts of the Northern Territory. Ben regularly appears on behalf of Applicants, Respondents and the Police Force in contested Domestic Violence matters. He also regularly appears in contested family law proceedings in the Federal Court as well as civil matters on behalf of a wide range of clients including government agencies and private individuals in the Local Court and NTCAT.
Ben regularly sits as a chairperson of quasi-judicial inquiries conducted by the Teachers Registration Board.
Before becoming a member of Murray Chambers, Ben worked at the Solicitor of the Northern Territory and for the Northern Territory Legal Aid Commission.
Ben joined the Bar and Murray Chambers in April 2023 and is actively engaged in the legal community. He is the Treasurer of the Northern Territory Bar Association, Editor and Treasurer of the Northern Territory Law Reporting Committee and Sessional Lecturer at Charles Darwin University.
Ben accepts briefs at all stages of matters whether that be pre-action advice work, alternate dispute resolution, trial preparation and contested hearings.
Ben is ready to accept briefs at various stages of matters including advice/review only, trial and appellate stages in the following areas:
